At the end of the Middle Age, mercantile activity will be the main actor boosting the construction of a global economy that will overcome the ravages of the low-medieval crisis and increase Europe's chances of reborn. The Fènix project aims to perform a history-based analysis of the construction of the first European trade networks. This will be possible by studying the economic activities of the Barcelonese merchant Joan de Torralba. Our main goal is to introduce to the great public a highly valuable documentary collection transcendental for the historical knowledge. These are the accounting books, letters and other files from the Torralba Society, a late medieval mercantile society operating from Barcelona to the Mediterranean in the middle of the 15th Century. By editing, studying and dissemination this files, we aim to carry out a double analysis focused on the birth of first international trade networks operating globally in the Mediterranean, and also focused in the creation of a 'merchants culture' as an intangible cultural heritage underpinning in the idea of Europe. The Torralba Society Files were recently given to the Catalonian National Archive and they currently are available to researchers through the open access. Studying these files is a significant milestone for the Catalan research in humanities. Through the execution of this project we will be able to deeply know the operation of a late medieval mercantile society in our country and provide new data for the study of the mercantile world.
For the first time in history, a key element of the Late Medieval society was able to generate international networks based on the circulation of information, multilingualism and the development of a long-lasting European culture and in which Catalonia has contributed significantly. Studying these processes upon unpublished documentation is a major challenge that will strengthen the knowledge and dissemination of our country's cultural heritage.
